Day 18, y’all! This is by far my favorite slot this year. Not because it’s the highest value - but because it brings two of my favorite things from two of my favorite places together in one cozy little advent gift. Day 18 boasts our Mexican Mocha (which you can find a history lesson about here), and a mini-bag of my go-to morning coffee addition: Moka Jo from Coffee Times Coffee House.
Coffee Times holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I met my partner, it’s my go-to for a coffee with friends, and it’s where I’ve hunkered down to study when no where else would let me focus. West Sixth, too, is special to me. When I was in college, I lived right down the street from the brewery. My roommates and I (all of legal age of course) used to spend a weekly evening in the beer garden or on the patio, having a round of beers and catching up. It was at Coffee Times that I wrote the majority of my senior seminar project. It was at West Sixth that I celebrated graduating from Transylvania University with a BA by drinking an IPA (Tripel wasn’t available, ok?). I have now worked at West Sixth for the past four years. For the past five years, since we met, I have gone to Coffee Times with my partner every single Saturday for a Moka Jo and an Iced Coffee. I am not alone. Far from it, actually. Coffee Times and West Sixth are two of Lexington’s favorite spots. They are examples of what it means to not only run a local business and brew a great beverage, but also of what it means to be inclusive, inviting, neighbors and pillars of the community. As of this year, Coffee Times has brewed, roasted, and served their own coffee on Moore Dr. for forty years. Our 13 years brewing, canning, and serving our beer at West Sixth, while certainly an accomplishment, makes us rather youthful in comparison. At the same time, though, we are fortunate to be here in Lexington, trodding the path places like Coffee Times had started down long before we were even a thought. It is our sincere hope that Coffee Times is around another 40+ years…and that we will be writing something equally as sappy in 40 years for their spot in our advent box. Regardless, though, we hope you enjoy your Moka Jo today — made and packaged right here in Lexington by our friends at Coffee Times, inside your West Sixth Advent box that’s full of beers and items also made, curated, and packaged right here in Lexington. Cheers to Lexington, local businesses, and all the love that makes them possible!
