What Our Brewers Are Drinking This Summer

When you spend your days brewing beer, people tend to ask one question over and over:

"What's your favorite beer?"

The truth is... it depends.

The first hot stretch of a Kentucky summer calls for something different than a chilly fall afternoon, and even our brewers rotate what's in their glass as the seasons change. So we asked our head brewer, Andy Smith, and our NuLu brewer, Tyler Farquhar: What West Sixth beers are you reaching for this summer?

Andy’s Picks:

Strawberry Kölsch

“It’s a refreshing brew year-round, but Strawberry Kölsch hits just right in KY Summer. Brewing it with lightly kilned Pilsner malt provides a canvas that allows the strawberries to shine. We add over 2,000 lbs of pureed strawberries per batch of Strawberry Kölsch. It’s very well-balanced with strawberry flavor, but it still drinks like a beer.”

Strawberry Kölsch is available seasonally all over Kentucky, in cans and on tap, while supplies last!

Covington Haus Lager

“Light and crispy, but still full flavored. Brewed with Pilsner malts along with Czech and German noble hops. I'm a sucker for Pale European Lagers. When we opened Covington Haus I was super excited to add this as a mainstay on the tap-list, and, I’m still just excited to drink it every single time I visit Cov. Especially in the summer!”

Covington Haus Lager is available on tap at West Sixth Covington Haus year-round!

Hop Static Ch. 15

“I'm an IPA fan through and through. The Hop Static series has truly allowed us to experiment with so many different hop varieties, including new varieties when they come available to brewers. Ch. 15 includes Dolcita, Eclipse and Mosaic hops. I think we were all excited about Dolcita in this Hop Static. It delivers really unique peach and subtle orange citrus profile that's super tasty in the Summertime.”

Hop Static Ch. 15 is available on tap and in cans all over Kentucky, until the channel changes!

Tyler’s Picks:

Table for 6

“Belgians are my jam, but some styles can be a bit too intense for hot weather. This table beer, though, hits all the right notes while also being sub-4% and light bodied.”

Table for 6 is a #NuLuBrewed beer that’s available on tap at West Sixth NuLu, while supplies last!

Pennyrile Pale Ale

“When I'm feeling something hop-forward but want to keep it on the lighter side, Pennyrile is always there. There's a reason Citra and Mosaic are staple hops for brewers everywhere, and they really shine in this classic beer. The name, the color, the taste... To me, they all blend in a way that anchors this beer firmly in Kentucky”

Pennyrile Pale Ale is available all over Kentucky, year-round, in cans and on tap!

NuLu Lager

“Spelt is one of those ingredients where, the second I tasted it in a beer, I knew I had to work it into at least one recipe. After some experimentation, I brewed my own take on a pale lager with a blend of spelt and Pilsner malts. This beer definitely edges into light lager territory while still holding some nutty, crackery malt character and a soft German hop bite.”

NuLu Lager is a #NuLuBrewed beer that’s available on tap at West Sixth NuLu, while supplies last!
